The AI Visibility Playbook: How B2B SaaS Wins Citations in ChatGPT, Perplexity & Google AI Overviews
Ranking #1 on Google no longer guarantees traffic. Here's the exact system we use to make LLMs cite our clients as the default answer in their category.

Half of the buying committee at your next enterprise deal will open ChatGPT before they open Google. If your product isn't the answer the model returns — with your brand named and a link back to your site — you've already lost the shortlist. Traditional SEO doesn't fix this. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) do.
This is the playbook we run for every B2B SaaS client on our AI Visibility retainer. It's the same system that took Loopstack from zero LLM mentions to the primary citation across all four major answer engines in four months.
Why classic SEO is not enough
LLMs don't pick a page — they synthesize an answer from many sources and cite a handful. The winners share three traits: a strong entity graph (the model recognizes them as a category authority), answer-shaped content (short, self-contained, quotable), and distributed citations across sources the model already trusts (Reddit, YouTube, G2, GitHub, Wikipedia, tier-1 press).
Step 1 — Rebuild your entity graph
Before any content ships, we make the model understand who you are, what you do, and what category you own. That means clean, connected schema across the site (Organization, Product, SoftwareApplication, FAQPage), a consistent about-page that names the category, and canonical mentions on Wikidata / Crunchbase / LinkedIn / G2 that all agree.
- Organization + SoftwareApplication + FAQPage schema on every product/solution page
- One canonical description of the category, reused verbatim across owned + third-party profiles
- sameAs graph linking your site to LinkedIn, GitHub, Crunchbase, G2, YouTube, Wikidata
Step 2 — Ship answer-shaped content
LLMs prefer content that answers a question in the first 60 words, follows with a short justification, then breaks the rest into scannable sub-answers. Rewriting your top 20 comparison, glossary and 'best of' pages in this shape is usually the single highest-ROI change in the whole playbook.
- 1Audit the 20 queries your ICP asks LLMs about your category
- 2For each, publish a canonical answer page in AEO format (question → 60-word answer → sub-answers → citations)
- 3Cross-link them from a hub so the model treats the cluster as authoritative
Step 3 — Seed citations where LLMs already read
The largest models weight sources like Reddit, YouTube transcripts, Stack Overflow, G2, and tier-1 press disproportionately. A great page nobody references is invisible to them. We run a light-touch digital PR arc alongside the content: expert answers, community threads, comparison reviews, and 3–5 press placements per quarter — all naming the category and linking back.
“AI Visibility is just SEO with the surface area rotated 90 degrees. The signals don't change — the destination does.”

Step 4 — Measure LLM share of voice
Without measurement this stays a vibe. We run a weekly prompt-tracking dashboard: 40–80 buyer-intent prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews. For each prompt we log whether the client is mentioned, cited with a link, or lost to a competitor — then a rolling 4-week trend line.
- Mention rate — % of prompts that name the brand
- Citation rate — % of prompts that link to owned pages
- Share of voice vs. top 3 competitors
- Answer-page contribution — which URLs get pulled most
What a realistic timeline looks like
AEO moves faster than classic SEO because LLMs re-index continuously. Expect the first citations inside 30–45 days after the entity + first 10 answer pages ship. Category-level dominance (top-1 share of voice) usually lands between month 3 and month 6 for a Series A–C SaaS.
Where to start this week
- 1Run 20 of your top buyer prompts through ChatGPT and Perplexity. Screenshot the answers.
- 2For each answer, note who's cited and why (source type, page format).
- 3Pick the 5 prompts where you should be the answer. Those are your first 5 AEO pages.
